  • LEAPING LEMURS!  A SUCCESS STORY IN MADAGASCAR!
  • Lemurs, Two Human Communities and Conservation All Win!

What began in 1999 as a simple rescue mission resulted in the discovery of a new sub-species of lemur. vastly improved two remote villages and stimulated the creation of a new national park. Canadian Dr. Mitch Irwin and Malagasy Jean-Luc Raharison are real heroes of science and conservation, but even more, they are humanitarians. With their leadership the former poachers and their families are now the enthusiastic guardians of their own future.

The discovery of a large tri-colored lemur, arguably a new sub-species of Propithecus diadema or the prototype for the Propithecus species itself in the remote rainforest of eastern Madagascar brings together the themes for conservation in this magnificent island:

  • Biological science
  • Conservation of the forest
  • Human development/health/education.
More than 60 Sifaka lemurs were darted, studied, and returned to their forest within four hours with no injuries or casualties.
